Travelling With Your Animal: Planning a Safe Journey

Whether it's a drive to family or a flight abroad, good planning keeps your animal safe, calm and within the rules.

Holiday seasons often mean long drives or flights. With some planning, most animals travel well.

Car journeys

  • Use a secure carrier or a dog seat belt harness. A loose animal can be badly injured in sudden braking and can distract the driver.
  • Keep the car cool and plan stops in shaded places for water and toilet breaks.
  • Never leave your animal alone in a parked car, even for a short stop.
  • Feed a light meal a few hours before setting off to reduce travel sickness.
  • Bring familiar bedding and a favourite toy.

Flights and travel abroad

Requirements depend on the destination and the airline, and they change. Start planning several weeks or months ahead:

  • Check the destination country's import rules - these often include a microchip, a rabies vaccination given within a specific time window, and an official health certificate.
  • Check the airline's rules on carriers, breeds and temperature restrictions. Some airlines restrict flat-faced breeds for safety reasons.
  • Book a vet appointment to review vaccines and prepare the paperwork.

Sedation

Don't give sedatives without veterinary advice. Some sedatives affect breathing and temperature control, and many airlines advise against them. Ask your vet about safer ways to reduce travel anxiety.

Packing list

Vaccination records, health certificate, enough food for the trip plus extra, water, bowls, any medicines, waste bags or litter, a leash, and a recent photo in case your animal gets lost.
